Using ChatGPT to Practice Spelling

I’m not a ChatGPT expert, but I have tried using it in several applications. Sometimes, after I write a blog article, I will ask ChatGPT to summarize my article to see if my point is clear. I have also used it to generate suggestions for article titles.

I recently used it to generate a spelling test to review spelling words with my daughter. When we practice spelling, I follow the format of saying the word, using it in a sentence, and repeating it. I create the sentences on the fly, and frequently, I use multiple words from the spelling list simultaneously, making it difficult for her. In addition, I have issues with singularity/plurality or tense when I create spelling tests on the fly. For example, for the word transport, I might want to say, “Bob is transporting his sister to practice” or “Bob transports the cargo to the warehouse,” which does not match the actual spelling word. I thought about it some more and realized this task was perfect for ChatGPT.

I have learned that ChatGPT works best when you tell its role, give it information, and tell it what format you want for the output. In my example, I told it,

“You are a fourth grade teacher, and you are giving a spelling test. Please create a list of age-appropriate sentences for fourth graders using the following list. Please respond with a numbered list.

    1. landform
    2. erosion
    3. transport
    4. teacher
    5. idiom
    6. choose
    7. chose
    8. evening
    9. indeed
    10. reef
    11. concrete
    12. emotion
    13. stress
    14. mindfulness
    15. though”

ChatGPT responded,

“Certainly! Here's a list of age-appropriate sentences for a fourth-grade spelling test using the provided words

1. The Grand Canyon is an impressive landform created by millions of years of erosion.

2. The constant rain caused erosion of the soil on the hillside.

3. Trains and buses are common forms of transport in the city.

4. My teacher helps me learn new things every day.

5. "Break a leg" is an example of an idiom that means "good luck" in theater.

6. I need to choose between going to the park or staying home to read.

7. Yesterday, I chose to have pizza for dinner.

8. We like to go for a walk in the park in the evening when the sun is setting.

9. "You're right," he said, "that is indeed a beautiful painting."

10. Snorkelers can explore the vibrant marine life around the coral reef.

11. The construction workers poured concrete to create a strong foundation for the building.

12. She expressed her emotion by painting a colorful picture.

13. Deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress and calm the mind.

14. Practicing mindfulness through meditation can lead to a greater sense of peace.

15. It's raining outside, but I'm going for a walk though I might get wet.

Make sure to read each sentence carefully, and then write the correct spelling of the word in the blank provided. Good luck!”

ChatGPT got a little confused at the end of its response, but the meat of the output had precisely what I needed. It creates sentences with more variety than what I would have made. I think this is a good use of ChatGPT. How have you used ChatGPT? Please let me know in the comments below.
